Spring is finally here!
As we say goodbye to winter and happily welcome in spring, it’s the perfect time to get your house in tip-top shape and ready for those warm summer days! Time to pack away those shovels! Here are 13 tips to get your home Spring ready!
1. CHECK FOR LOW SPOTS IN YOUR YARD
Fill low areas in your yard with compacted soil. Spring/Summer showers can lead to your yard flooding, which could potentially lead to foundation flooding and damage.
And ain’t nobody’s got time for that!
2. CHECK ROOF FOR REPAIR
Take a walk around your house and examine the roof to see if there are any missing or broken shingles. Winter weather can do a number on your roof, so make sure that you replace anything that might have been damaged.
3. CHECK WATER FAUCETS AND HOSES
Depending on how rough the winter was, your outdoor water faucets and hoses might have freeze damage. You can check this by turning on the water and holding your thumb over the opening. If you can stop the water flow, then it’s likely your indoor pipe might be damaged and will need to be replaced.
4. GIVE YOUR FRONT DOOR SOME LOVE
Give the entrance of your house a mini face lift by polishing the knobs and hinges and giving the door a fresh coat of paint. Maybe pick a new, brighter color for the warmer months to guarantee a warm welcome to visitors! Also, put out a clean, new welcome mat and check to make sure the doorbell works.
5. REPAIR/RESTORE THE WALKWAY
All of the winter weather can do some serious damage to your walkway. Now that warmer days are heading our way, take the time to fix cracks and replace loose bricks or stones in your walkway. Renting a power washer can also help clean up the appearance of your walk way.
6. CHANGE OUTDOOR BULBS
Make sure that you clean all of your outdoor light fixtures and replace any light bulbs that might have burnt out.
7. PRUNE AND MULCH
Take a walk around your house and clear out any debris in your yard. Prune dead branches and trim back any overgrown plantings that might be obstructing the view of your beautiful home.
8. BRIGHTEN UP YOUR YARD
Plant new shrubs and flowers to really give your home a spring time feel. Large pots, hanging baskets, or flower boxes are all great options for brightening up the outside of your home.
9. CLEAR OUT GUTTERS
Take the time to inspect your gutters and downspouts around your house. This can save you a ton of money in repair costs later. Make sure they are clear of leaves, tree limbs and other debris. Also, make sure to check for loose or leaky gutters. Insufficient drainage can lead to water in your basement or crawl spaces. Double check that downspouts drain away from the foundation because again,
Ain’t nobody got time for that!!
10. DE-CLUTTER GARAGE
Take a day and do some serious Spring cleaning in your garage. You’ll be happy you did later. No one wants to spend 30 minutes climbing over bikes and searching through storage bins to find the football or the pool toy when you could be spending that time enjoying the weather outside! So, clear out all of the junk that you don’t need and organize the garage to make it accessible for all of your summer needs. (example: make a section for lawn equipment, pool toys, power tools, auto tools/accessories, sporting equipment, kids toys/bikes etc.)
11. PREPARE OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT
Check all of your outdoor and lawn equipment (gas and battery powered) to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharpen cutting blades to make yardwork easier and less time consuming.
12. TIDY UP
Sweep all sidewalks and porches, make sure railings are tightened and repaint support beams and posts.
13. REVIVE OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Your outdoor furniture might have taken a beating this winter, so to liven them up again, give them a fresh coat of paint and throw on a couple new pillows. To fill in empty spots or to add some extra friendliness to your porch or patio, put out a bench or porch swing!
Now that your home is all ready for Spring, grab yourself a sweet tea, relax and enjoy the weather!
